What in the world is "Relaxday"?

Well imagine this... as the calm waves gently crash against the remarkably beautiful Hawaiian shoreline, a gentle breeze brushes past your frolicking sand filled toes serving as a subtle reminder that you are at last in paradise. Today is “Relaxday” which means no cares, no responsibilities, and definitely no stress. Maybe it’s just me but this all sounds like a dream come true. Throw in bottomless ice cold mimosas and an all you can eat Hawaiian buffet, and I'll be writing my next post from the beaches of Hawaii.

When I think about relaxation, this is often the picture I draw in my mind. Of course this picture seems unmanageable and honestly unrealistic. I mean we’re in the middle of a pandemic after all, aren’t we? Not to mention I have responsibilities; a job, a family, friendships. All requiring my time and energy.

Why prioritize relaxation?

It’s easy to just write off our need for relaxation. Why would I need to relax when I make healthy eating choices, exercise a couple days a week, and love the busyness of life?

Well according to the Mayoclinic, relaxation can help to:
  • Slow heart rate
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Slow your breathing rate
  • Improve digestion
  • Maintain normal blood sugar levels
  • Reduce activity of stress hormones
  • Increase blood flow to major muscles
  • Reduce muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Improve concentration and mood
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Lower fatigue
  • Reduce anger and frustration
  • Boost confidence to handle problems

Relax, Refresh, Repeat

We may not all agree that relaxation is a necessity, but I think these benefits remind us of why we need to make it a priority in our lives. Most of us don’t have the ability to travel to Hawaii just for a day (If you do have that ability, please call me!), but we do have the ability to adjust our schedules to free up an hour or two for relaxation. So my challenge for myself and for you is to plan a relaxation hour this week. Schedule a massage, take a warm bath, go for a walk in the park, read a book and sip on a hot latte, PRIORITIZE YOU!

So what are you waiting for? Go plan your relaxation hour! :)
